Comparing Freeware Antivirus Titans: Avira, Avast & AVG

by Virus Help on May 6, 2011

See a long list of freeware here: www.duncsweb.com Here I compare the 3 major free Antiviruses all inside a virtual machine (same hardware, files, disk) I added 24 seconds to Avast Virus scan stopwatch because I started the scan and forgot to start the stopwatch and started when i paused the video. Also (thanks for the info robferro) I scanned on medium sensitivity. Total time was 3mins20 for Avast. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition http eb9ec4e2f55a77a5b2fc31 - 2nd Most downloaded software at download.com - 6th Best Detection Rate - Total of 56624k RAM when scanning - Software Scanned 11111 objects, and took 6 mins 28 secs - Total of 4344k RAM when idle - Request for Registration (but not necessary) AntiVir Personal Edition Classic www.download.com 2ecc6c731de5d64f570327 - 15th Most downloaded software at Download.com - 2nd Best Detection Rate - Total of 54780k RAM when scanning - Software Scanned 35484 objects, and took 4 mins 28 secs - Total of 8004k RAM when idle - Pop-up when Updates Avast! Home Edition www.download.com bba631dd1b44c0b96da1f7 - 5th Most downloaded software at Download.com - 11th best detection rate - Total of 74671k RAM when scanning (including avast.setup) - Software Scanned 12022 objects, and took 3 mins 20 because I didnt start the stopwatch when scan started (I realised when I paused) - Total of 32870k RAM when idle - 60 Day registration, Spinning icon, hard to use software

You should check out Comodo Internet Security + Firewall! It has HIPS, Sandboxing, Whitelisting, Free Updates, Network Defense, You can view active connections, Block networks, View Active Processes in-case you need to block a process. Also it has my protected files (protects system files from being modified), my protected registry keys, etc. Best of all, ITS FREE

@AdarkContrast AVG was never good. The only reason it became so popular was because it was the first mainstream free anti-virus software.

Tried avast , I could even get on the internet, it lock up. Uninstall it and I’m back to normal. Tried Avira works..on issues so far.

@YumiNguyenz yea but a least avast is faster than avg and avira i mostly recommend avast,but if you want you could turn off avast setting that makes it talk for example when theirs an update avast says and talks “updated something??”but you could turn it off with silent mode or going to settings

YumiNguyenz August 3, 2010 at 3:56 am

@chris123qwe1 so when i play game i need to play with silent mode from avast?

chris123qwe1 August 3, 2010 at 4:21 am

@catadeluxe avast

chris123qwe1 August 3, 2010 at 4:48 am

avast comes with silent mode i have avast internet scurity and i play games for example counter strike,call of duty,etc so avast is good it runs smooth i noticed when i changed from mcafee to avast

Good luck getting a refund if you need it- The software is great but it conflicts with another program and there is no way to completely shut off AVG – not even taking it out with run>msconfig>startup etc. It still loads about 7 different executable files that suck up system resources. Only noticeable though if you’re running graphic intensive programs like driving sims. but it when it came time for a refund they gave me the run around then ceased communication with me.

@YumiNguyenz use avast i had a virus wich was a music file and avira never detected it and with avst not only didi it detecy it but it deleted it as well

prusaks August 3, 2010 at 6:18 am

AVG main problem, there is no rootkit protection for free av.

mrlucas8989 August 3, 2010 at 6:38 am

@YumiNguyenz Avast 5 ofcource!

YumiNguyenz August 3, 2010 at 7:17 am

RagnarokVampire August 3, 2010 at 7:55 am

Say is it okay to install 2 antiviruses in 1 computer?

Coz i’ve heard about system clashes and all..

I’m currently using a Norton360[my friend paid for me. =)] and I wanted to use Avira(I was using this last time and it’s good).

tryllernc August 3, 2010 at 8:46 am

@YumiNguyenz use avast is best its help you much i have avast its best

YumiNguyenz August 3, 2010 at 9:07 am

I like Avira & Avast but i don’t know which 1 should i use for gaming???? can anyone give me some idea? TY

vaidas01uk August 3, 2010 at 9:48 am

i always used avast had no problems, although the newer versions 5.0 is a bit looking annoying, so i sticked with the older 4.8 version and am very happy of what it does. literally it stops or prevents on viruses coming from anywhere whether its external drive or net, it has a alarm tipe of notice stating a virus so you most likely just of a sound press option given abort connection or delete file( you can try fix it too). so yeah thanks for video i think Avast is still a king on free-ware AV’s
